2024년 6월 1일 니혼게이자이신문에 따르면 일본 가상화폐 거래소인 DMM 비트코인은 전날 비트코인이 부정하게 유출됐다고 발표했다. 유출 규모는 약4200억원에 달한다. DMM 비트코인은 전날 부정 유출을 확인했다면서도 사건 발생 경위 등에 대해서는 설명하지 않았다. 회사 측은 “피해 상황에 대한 자세한 내용은 계속 조사 중”이라고 설명했다.

DMM 비트코인은 유출된 고객 비트코인을 그룹사의 지원을 받아 전액 보증할 방침이다. DMM 그룹은 국내에 DMM 게임즈 등을 보유한 IT기업이다. 일본에서 가상화폐 유출 사건이 벌어진 건 이번이 처음이 아니다. 앞서 2019년 일본 가상화폐 교환업체인 비트포인트 재팬에서 380억원 규모의 가상화폐가 유출됐다. 2021년에도 대규모 유출 사건이 벌어진 바 있다. 이번 유출 사건은 2018년 코인 체크의 가상화폐 해킹 사건 이후 두 번째로 큰 규모로 보인다. 당시에는 약 580억엔이 유출된바 있다. 금융청은 관련 법에 근거해 DMM 비트코인에 원인 규명과 함께 고객 보호를 명령했다. 경찰도 부정 유출 발생을 파악하고 수사에 나섰다. DMM 비트코인은 비트코인 등 약 40개의 가상화폐를 취급하는 가상화폐 거래소로 고객 계좌 약 37만개를 보유하고 있다.

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun on June 1, 2024, DMM Bitcoin, a Japanese virtual currency exchange, announced that Bitcoin had been fraudulently leaked the previous day. The size of the leak amounts to approximately 420 billion won. DMM Bitcoin confirmed the illegal leak the day before, but did not explain how the incident occurred. The company explained, “We are continuing to investigate details of the damage.”

DMM Bitcoin plans to fully guarantee leaked customer Bitcoin with the support of its group companies. DMM Group is an IT company that owns DMM Games in Korea. This is not the first time a virtual currency leak has occurred in Japan. Previously, in 2019, 38 billion won worth of virtual currency was leaked from Bitpoint Japan, a Japanese virtual currency exchange company. A large-scale leak incident also occurred in 2021. This leak appears to be the second largest after the Coincheck cryptocurrency hacking incident in 2018. At that time, approximately 58 billion yen was leaked. Based on relevant laws, the Financial Services Commission ordered DMM Bitcoin to investigate the cause and protect customers. The police also discovered the illegal leak and began an investigation. DMM Bitcoin is a virtual currency exchange that handles about 40 virtual currencies, including Bitcoin, and has about 370,000 customer accounts.
