<과천까지 합류한 서울 메가시티>

 

경기도 과천시가 김포시, 구리시, 고양시에 이어 '메가시티 서울' 논의에 추가로 합류했다. 오세훈 서울시장과 신계용 과천시장은 2023년 11월 29일 서울시청에서 과천의 서울 편입을 두고 면담을 가졌다. 김포시장과 구리시장, 고양시장에 이은 네 번째 경기도 지자체장과 오 시장의 회동이다. 신 시장은 먼저 오 시장과 회동을 가진 다른 경기도 지자체들과 마찬가지로 과천시 역시 '자치시' 형태로의 편입을 추진하겠다는 뜻도 밝혔다. '과천구' 혹은 '과천동'처럼 축소돼 서울시로 편입하는 것이 아니라는 점을 분명히 했다. '과천자치시'로 전환해 서울로 편입을 추진하겠다는 것이다. 이 경우 서울시는 자치시로 전환해 서울 편입을 희망하는 과천시, 구리시, 고양시, 김포시 등을 거느리는 메가시티로 재탄생하게 된다. 수도의 메가시티 전환을 아시아에서 가장 먼저 도입한 '도쿄도'의 모델을 따르는 셈이다. 서울시는 김포시, 구리시 등과 마찬가지로 과천시와도 '공동연구반'을 구성해 서울 편입의 장단점과 효용 등을 분석해 나간다는 방침이다.

Gwacheon City, Gyeonggi Province, has additionally joined the discussion of "Mega City Seoul" following Gimpo City, Guri City and Goyang City. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and Gwacheon Mayor Shin Gye-yong met at Seoul City Hall on November 29, 2023 over Gwacheon's incorporation into Seoul. It is the fourth meeting between the head of a local government in Gyeonggi Province and Mayor Oh, following Gimpo Market, Guri Market, and Goyang Market. Mayor Shin also announced that Gwacheon City, like other local governments in Gyeonggi Province that first met with Mayor Oh, will push for the transfer into the form of "autonomous city." It was made clear that it was not reduced like "Gwacheon-gu" or "Gwacheon-dong" and transferred to Seoul. It is said that it will be converted to "Gwacheon Autonomous City" and promoted to be incorporated into Seoul. In this case, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will convert to an autonomous city and be reborn as a mega city with Gwacheon City, Guri City, Goyang City, and Gimpo City, which hope to be incorporated into Seoul. It follows the model of 'Tokyo,' which was the first in Asia to introduce the capital's megacity transition. Like Gimpo City and Guri City, the Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to form a "joint research team" with Gwacheon City to analyze the advantages and disadvantages and utility of incorporation into Seoul.
