미국 증권거래위원회(SEC)는 이더리움 선물 ETF에 대해 오락가락이다. 현재 SEC에 이더리움 선물 ETF를 신청한 기관은 모두 7 곳. 7월말부터 신청이 쇄도하고 있다. 블록웍스에 따르면 몇몇 기관들이 SEC에서 전화를 받았다. “이더리움 선물 ETF 신청서를 검토할 준비가 돼 있다”는 것. 이 소문이 퍼지면서 볼래틸리티 쉐어즈, 그레이스케일, 비트와이즈, 프로셰어즈, 반에크 등이 앞다퉈 이더 선물 ETF 신청서를 냈다. 그런데 똑같은 신청서에 대해 지난 2002년 5월 SEC는 전혀 다른 태도를 보였다. “이더리움 선물 ETF가 너무 어렵다”며 신청서를 다시 가져가라고 했다는 것. SEC의 바뀐 태도에 대해 모 기관의 법률 고문은 포춘에 “SEC가 정신분열증에 걸렸다”고 말했다. 공무원의 마음은 갈대다. 바람에 따라 흔들린다. SEC에 부는 바람이 비트코인 현물 ETF에도 유리하게 작용하기를 기대해본다.
