월가에서 '암호화폐 거물'로 불리는 마이클 세일러 마이크로스트래티지 회장이 비트코인 대규모 매입에 나섰다. 2023년 12월 27일 비즈니스 인사이더는 미국 증권거래위원회(SEC)의 자료를 인용해 세일러가 지난 11월 30일부터 12월 26일까지 약 6억 1600만 달러(약 8000억원)에 달하는 비트코인 14620개를 매수했다고 밝혔다. SEC에 따르면 이번 기간 동안 비트코인 평균 매수 가격은 42110달러로 집계됐다. 이에 따라 세일러의 비트코인 평균 단가는 31168달러로 조정됐다. 또한 이번 매수로 비트코인 총보유액은 약 80억 달러(약 10조 3300억원), 보유량은 189150개로 늘어났다. 이를 두고 비즈니스 인사이더는 마이클 세일러 회장이 내년 비트코인 현물 ETF 승인을 앞두고 대규모 베팅에 나섰다고 평가했다.
SEC가 내년 1월 비트코인 현물 ETF를 승인할 경우 암호화폐 생태계에 신규 자금이 유입되는 과정에서 비트코인 가격이 급등할 확률이 있기 때문이다. 비즈니스 인사이더에 따르면 세일러의 이번 매수는 지난 2021년 2월 이후 두 번째로 큰 규모다. 한편 마이클 세일러는 올해 비트코인 강세론을 수차례 강조한 바 있다. 그는 지난 2023년 12월 19일 블룸버그와의 인터뷰에서 "내년 1월 비트코인 현물 ETF 승인은 수요 폭발을 이끌 중요한 촉매제가 될 것"이라며 "반감기 호재까지 더해져 암호화폐 강세장이 연출될 것"이라고 밝혔다.

MicroStrategy Chairman Michael Sailor, dubbed the "cryptocurrency mogul" on Wall Street, has launched a massive purchase of Bitcoin. Citing data from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Business Insider said on Dec. 27, 2023, that Sailor purchased 14620 Bitcoin worth about 616 million dollars from Nov. 30 to Dec. 26. According to the SEC, the average purchase price of Bitcoin during this period was 4,2110. Accordingly, the average unit price of Sailor's Bitcoin was adjusted to $3,1168. In addition, with the purchase, total bitcoin holdings have increased to about $8 billion (about 10.33 trillion won) and holdings to 189,150. Business Insider assessed that Michael Sailor is making a massive bet ahead of the approval of the Bitcoin spot ETF next year.
If the SEC approves the Bitcoin spot ETF in January next year, there is a possibility that the price of Bitcoin will surge in the process of new funds flowing into the cryptocurrency ecosystem. According to Business Insider, Sailor's purchase is the second largest since February 2021. Meanwhile, Michael Sailor has stressed several times the theory of Bitcoin's strength this year. In an interview with Bloomberg on December 19, 2023, he said, "The approval of a Bitcoin spot ETF in January next year will be an important catalyst to lead to an explosion in demand," adding, "It will create a strong market for cryptocurrency, adding to the good news of the half-term."
