미국증권거래위원회(SEC)가 2024년 1월 10일 비트코인 ETF(상장지수펀드) 승인을 발표할 지 초미의 관심사로 떠올랐다. 하루 전 다시 한 번 암호화폐의 신뢰성이 도전받는 거짓 트윗 소동까지 벌어졌기 때문이다. 원래 예정대로면 SEC는 현물 비트코인에 투자하는 ETF를 신청한 아크 인베스트와 21셰어즈의 펀드에 대한 SEC의 승인 여부를 이 날 발표할 것으로 예상돼왔다.

 

하루전 거짓 트윗 소동이 벌어진 후 비트코인은 허위트윗 소동이 벌어지기 전보다 0.9% 하락한 4만 5114달러에 거래중이다. 거래소인 코인베이스 글로벌(COIN) 주가도 이 날 개장전 거래에서 3% 하락했다. 마켓워치에 따르면 SEC의 계정을 해킹한 침입자가 비트코인 ETF가 승인됐다는 허위 게시물을 올렸을 때 비트코인은 4만8000달러까지 급등했다. 그러나 이후 SEC가 이 게시물이 허위라고 밝히자 2% 가까이 하락했다. SEC는 이 사건을 조사하기 위해 법 집행기관과 협력중이라고 밝혔다. 이번 SEC 계정 해킹 소동이 암호화폐에 대한 신뢰를 더 떨어뜨릴 것이라는 우려가 있음에도 시장 참여자들은 ETF 승인 일정 자체는 크게 영향받지 않을 것으로 보고 있다.

It has emerged as a matter of keen interest whether the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will announce approval of a Bitcoin ETF (exchange-traded fund) on January 10, 2024. This is because a day ago, there was even an uproar with false tweets that once again challenged the credibility of cryptocurrency. According to the original schedule, the SEC was expected to announce on this day whether it would approve the fund of Ark Invest and 21 Shares, which applied for an ETF investing in spot Bitcoin.

 

After the false tweet uproar a day ago, Bitcoin is trading at $45,114, down 0.9% from before the false tweet uproar. Shares of Coinbase Global (COIN), an exchange, also fell 3% in pre-market trading on this day. According to MarketWatch, Bitcoin soared to $48,000 when an intruder who hacked the SEC's account posted a false statement claiming that a Bitcoin ETF had been approved. However, after the SEC revealed that the post was false, it fell nearly 2%. The SEC said it is cooperating with law enforcement to investigate the incident. Despite concerns that the SEC account hacking incident will further reduce trust in cryptocurrencies, market participants believe that the ETF approval schedule itself will not be significantly affected.
