미국 뉴욕 증시에 '가상화폐 대장'인 비트코인 현물 상장지수펀드(ETF)가 줄줄이 상장한 것을 계기로 채굴주에 주목하라는 월가 분석이 나왔다. 오는 4월 비트코인 반감기를 앞두고 채굴 보수가 늘어날 것이라는 예상에서다. 다만 비트코인 시세가 일정 수준으로 오르지 않는 상황을 감안해 종목별 옥석 가리기가 필요하다는 지적도 따른다. 2024년 1월 16일 고텀 추가니 미국 번스타인증권 가상화폐 담당 수석 연구원은 고객 메모를 통해 "최근 채굴 기업들 주가 약세가 두드러졌지만 여전히 우량 채굴주에 대해서는 낙관론을 유지할 필요가 있다"면서 "라이엇 블록체인(RIOT)과 클린스파크(CLSK) 주식을 매수할 만하다"고 언급했다. 라이엇 블록체인과 클린스파크는 올해 첫 거래일인 지난 2일 이후부터 이날까지 각각 약 27%, 30% 급락했다.

 

미국 증권거래위원회(SEC)가 비트코인 현물 ETF 11종 상장을 승인한 것을 계기로 4만9000달러에 육박했던 비트코인 시세가 차익 실현 매도세 탓에 하락하자 채굴주 변동성도 덩달아 커졌다. 11일 이후 라이엇 블록체인과 클린스파크 주가는 3거래일 만에 각각 14%, 17% 떨어졌다. 다만 추가니 연구원은 4월 비트코인 반감기와 관련해 "통상 반감기에는 채굴자 수익이 증가하는 경향이 있다는 점에 주목해야 한다"고 강조했다. 그는 "비트코인이 5만~5만5000달러 범위로 오르지 않는다면 채굴 비용 효율성이 떨어지기 때문에 저비용 채굴 구조를 갖춘 기업들만 유리할 것"이라고 언급했다.

Wall Street's analysis called for attention to mining stocks in the wake of the successive listing of the Bitcoin Spot Exchange Fund (ETF), the "virtual currency leader," on the New York Stock Exchange. The move is based on the expectation that mining fees will increase ahead of the Bitcoin half-life in April. However, some point out that it is necessary to distinguish between good and bad by stock considering the situation in which Bitcoin's market price does not rise to a certain level. On January 16, 2024, Gautam Choudini, a senior researcher in charge of virtual currency at Bernstein Securities in the U.S., said in a customer note, "Although the recent weakness in mining companies' stock prices has been noticeable, it is still necessary to maintain optimism about blue-chip mining stocks," adding, "It is worth buying Riot Blockchain (RIOT) and CleanSpark (CLSK) stocks." Riot Blockchain and CleanSpark plunged about 27% and 30% from the 2nd, the first trading day of the year, to the same day, respectively.

 

As the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the listing of 11 Bitcoin spot ETFs, the price of Bitcoin, which had been close to $49,000, fell due to profit-taking selling, the volatility of mining stocks also increased. Since the 11th, Riot Blockchain and CleanSpark shares have fallen 14% and 17%, respectively, in three trading days. However, regarding the half-life of Bitcoin in April, researcher Chugany emphasized, "It should be noted that miners' profits tend to increase in the normal half-life." He noted, "If Bitcoin does not rise to the range of $50,000 to $55,000, only companies with low-cost mining structures will be advantageous because mining cost efficiency will decrease."
