사상 최고가를 연달아 기록하던 비트코인 가격이 며칠 사이 주춤한 모습을 보이는 가운데 높은 거래량을 보여 온 비트코인 현물 ETF인 그레이스케일 비트코인 트러스트에서 2024년 3월 18일 사상 최대 규모의 자금 유출이 있었다고 코인데스크US 등 외신들이 보도했다. 비트맥스 리서치가 집계한 데이터에 따르면 이날 GBTC에서 유출된 금액은 6억4300만 달러에 달한다. 이는 GBTC가 현물 ETF로 전환한 이후 가장 큰 규모의 자금 유출이다. 이번에 자금이 빠져나가면서 비트코인 가격에 압력을 가하고 있다고 코인데스크US는 보도했다.
최근 7만3000달러를 넘기는 등 연이어 최고가를 찍던 비트코인 가격은 지난 주말 사이 하락세를 보인 뒤 횡보세를 거듭하며 대체로 6만 달러 후반대에 머물러 왔다. 그러다 이날 오전 10시 30분께부터 비트코인 가격은 코인마켓캡 기준 6만 4000달러대로 또 추락했다. 기본적으로 최근 상승세에 따른 차익 실현 매물 출회가 영향을 미치고 있는 가운데 GBTC 자금 유출 영향도 있는 것으로 풀이된다. 블록체인 데이터 분석업체 크립토퀀트는 2024년 3월 17일 비트코인을 5개월 미만으로 보유한 단기 투자자들이 최근 큰 이익을 거뒀다고 분석하기도 했다.
