세계 최대 암호화폐 가운데 한 곳인 FTX가 결국 11일(이하 현지시간) 미국 법원에 파산보호를 신청했다.
불과 1주일 전만 해도 FTX는 실리콘밸리 투자자들로부터 가장 신뢰할 만한 암호화폐 거래소라는 평가를 받으며 별다른 투자금 보호 장치 없이 약 20억달러를 끌어들일 정도로 탄탄한 것처럼 보였지만 실상은 그렇지 않았던 것으로 보인다.
바이낸스가 FTX와 합병에서 발을 빼면서 자금난이 공개됐고, 결국 이날 파산보호의 길로 접어들었다.
암호화폐 신화를 써 내려갔던 공동창업자 겸 최고경영자(CEO) 샘 뱅크먼-프라이드는 사임했다.
다만 FTX는 뱅크먼-프라이드가 회사에 계속 남아 파산보호 절차 전환을 돕게 된다고 밝혔다.
월스트리트저널(WSJ), CNBC 등 외신에 따르면 FTX는 이날 파산보호신청 사실을 공개하고 자산 매각을 통해 채권자들에게 자산을 나눠줄 계획이라고 밝혔다. 사퇴한 뱅크먼-프라이드를 대신해 존 J 레이3세가 새 CEO가 됐다.
파산보호는 FTX그룹 산하의 FTX트레이딩, 글로벌 온라인거래 웹사이트 FTX닷컴, 뱅크먼-프라이드가 공동 창업한 암호화폐 거래업체 알라메다리서치, 미국 거래 플랫폼인 FTX US 등이다.
뱅크먼-프라이드는 올해 암호화폐 거래소들이 '암호화폐 겨울'로 고전하면서 줄줄이 위기에 몰리자 암호화폐 업계 최후의 보루로 안전판 역할을 해왔다. 6월에는 암호화폐 대출업체 블록파이가 유동성 위기를 겪자 FTX를 동원해 2억5000만달러 신용을 제공하는 한편 블록파이 인수를 진행했다. 또 알라메다를 통해 캐나다 암호화폐 중개업체 보이저디지털 지분을 인수하는 방식으로 자금을 지원하기도 했다.그러나 뱅크먼-프라이드의 입지는 지난 열흘 사이 역전됐다.
코인데스크가 FTX와 알라메다간에 얼마나 깊은 유착관계가 있는지를 보도하고 난 뒤 투자자들로부터 믿음을 잃으면서 FTX는 추락하기 시작했다. 그 여파로 FTX인터내셔널이 8일 암호화폐 거래와 달러 등으로 인출하는 것을 중단했지만 뱅크먼-프라이드는 미 플랫폼인 FTX US는 FTX인터내셔널의 유동성 위기에 영향을 받지 않을 것이라고 밝혔다.
그렇지만 FTX US는 결국 10일 "FTX US내 (암호화폐)거래가 수일 안에 중단될 수도 있다"고 후퇴했고 결국 이날 파산보호신청 명단에 이름을 올렸다.

Just a week ago, FTX was considered the most reliable cryptocurrency exchange by Silicon Valley investors, and seemed solid enough to attract about $2 billion without any investment protection, but in reality, it did not seem to be. Financial difficulties were revealed as Binance withdrew from the merger with FTX, and eventually entered the path of bankruptcy protection on the same day. Sam Bankman-Pride, co-founder and CEO who wrote the cryptocurrency myth, resigned. However, FTX said Bankman-Pride will continue to stay in the company to help switch to bankruptcy protection procedures. According to foreign media such as the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and CNBC, FTX announced that it plans to disclose its application for bankruptcy protection and distribute assets to creditors through asset sales. John J. Ray III became the new CEO in place of Bankman-Pride, who resigned. Bankruptcy protection includes FTX Trading under FTX Group, FTX Dotcom, a global online trading website, Alamedarisearch, a cryptocurrency trader co-founded by Bankman-Pride, and FTX US, a U.S. trading platform. Bankman-Pride has served as a safety valve as the last bastion of the cryptocurrency industry as cryptocurrency exchanges struggled with the "cryptocurrency winter" this year. In June, when cryptocurrency lender BlockFi suffered a liquidity crisis, FTX was mobilized to provide $250 million in credit while acquiring BlockFi. It also provided funds through Alameda by acquiring a stake in Voyager Digital, a Canadian cryptocurrency brokerage.But Bankman-Pride's position has been reversed in the past 10 days.
FTX began to fall as Coindesque lost faith from investors after reporting how deep a bond was between FTX and Alameda. In the aftermath, FTX International stopped withdrawing cryptocurrency transactions and dollars on the 8th, but Bankman-Pride said that the U.S. platform FTX US will not be affected by FTX International's liquidity crisis. However, FTX US eventually retreated on the 10th, saying, "Transactions within FTX US (cryptocurrency) may be suspended within a few days," and eventually was listed on the list of bankruptcy protection applications.
