뉴욕증시가 산타랠리 시즌에 접어든 가운데 ‘미국 개미’(개인 투자자)들이 앞다퉈 주식 매수에 나섰다. 2023년 12월 6일 JP모건은 투자 메모를 통해 미국 개인투자자들이 최근 주간에만 총 68억 달러(약 8조8924억원) 어치 주식을 매수한 것으로 집계됐다고 밝혔다. 이는 지난해 3월 이후 주간 기준 최대 매수세이며 절반에 달하는 28억 달러가 상장지수펀드(ETF)가 아닌 개별 종목 매수금액이라고 JP모건은 분석했다. ‘미국 중앙은행’ 연방준비제도(Fed)의 긴축 종료 기대와 연말 상승장 기대가 덩달아 매수세를 키웠다는 평이다. 집계에 따르면 개별 종목 매수 인기를 끈 종목 1위는 테슬라(TSLA)에 이어 엔비디아(NVDA), 아마존(AMZN), 어드밴스드마이크로시스디바이스(AMD), 마이크로소프트(MSFT), 메타(META), 스노우플레이크(SNOW), 팔란티어(PLTR), 알파벳(GOOGL), 월마트(WMT) 순이다. 뉴욕증시는 통상 추수감사절을 전후해 주가가 오르는 ‘산타랠리’ 장세가 나타난다.

 

증시분석업체 스탁 트레이더스 얼머낵의 제프리 허쉬 최고경영자(CEO)는 “연말 산타랠리라 하더라도 12월 초는 일시적으로 증시가 약세를 보일 수 있다”면서 “고액 투자자들의 세금 감면 목적 주식 매도와 기관 투자자들의 연말 포트폴리오 리밸런싱이 겹치는 시기이기 때문”이라고 언급했다. 다만 허쉬 CEO 는 “미국 대선이 열리는 해 이전 연도 12월에 주식시장이 강세를 보이는 경향이 있다는 점에 주목해야 한다”고 덧붙였다. ​지난 1950년 이후 각 연도마다 월별 지수 흐름을 보면 대선 이전 연도 12월은 S&P 500 지수와 다우존스20산업평균지수가 열두 달 중 세 번째로 높은 수익률을 기록한 달이었다.

With the New York Stock Exchange entering the Santa Rally season, "American ants" (individual investors) are scrambling to buy stocks. On December 6, 2023, JPMorgan said in an investment memo that U.S. individual investors have purchased a total of $6.8 billion (about 8.8924 trillion won) worth of stocks in recent weeks alone. This is the largest weekly purchase since March last year, and JP Morgan analyzed that $2.8 billion, which is half of the total, is the purchase of individual stocks, not ETFs. Analysts say that expectations for the end of the tightening of the U.S. Central Bank's Federal Reserve (Fed) and expectations for a rise at the end of the year have increased the buying trend. According to the tally, the top stocks that have gained popularity in buying individual stocks are Nvidia (NVDA), Amazon (AMZN), Advanced Microsis Device (AMD), Microsoft (MSFT), Meta (META), Snowflake (SNOW), Palantir (PLTR), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Walmart (WMT). The New York Stock Exchange usually has a "Santa Rally" market, where stock prices rise around Thanksgiving.

 

Jeffrey Hirsch, CEO of Stock Traders Almanac, a stock market analysis company, said, "Even at the end of the year, the stock market may temporarily weaken in early December. This is because it is a time when high-value investors sell stocks for tax reduction purposes and institutional investors rebalance their portfolios at the end of the year." However, CEO Hershey added, "It should be noted that the stock market tends to be strong in December of the year before the U.S. presidential election." Looking at the monthly index flow for each year since 1950, the year before the presidential election, December was the third-highest month out of 12 months for the S&P 500 and Dow Jones 20 Industrial Average.
