비트코인, 이더리움과 함께 한때 ‘3대 코인’으로 꼽혔던 가상자산 리플이 최근 큰 폭으로 상승했다. 지난 2020년 이후 4년을 끌어온 미국 증권거래위원회(SEC)와의 법적 분쟁이 곧 종지부를 찍을 것이라는 전망이 잇따라 나오면서 투자가 몰린 것으로 분석된다. 2024년 7월 18일 오후 3시 기준 국내 가상자산 거래 플랫폼인 업비트에서 리플은 825원에 거래되고 있다. 리플은 이날 오전 장에서 강세를 보이며 880원을 넘어선 후 차익 실현 매도가 늘면서 조정을 받았다. 가상자산 시장은 2024년 7월 13일 미국 대선의 공화당 후보로 나선 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령이 총격을 받은 이후 지금껏 상승세를 이어 왔다. 가상자산에 친화적인 입장을 보이고 있는 트럼프 전 대통령이 이번 사건으로 당선 가능성이 커지면서 규제 완화에 대한 기대감이 커졌기 때문이다. 리플은 주요 코인 가운데 최근 며칠간 가장 눈에 띄는 상승 흐름을 보였다. ‘대장주’인 비트코인은 지난 11일 8200만원에서 이날 9000만원으로 1주일 동안 약 10% 올랐다. 이더리움의 경우 이더리움 현물 상장지수펀드(ETF) 승인 기대감까지 반영됐지만 상승 폭은 비트코인과 비슷했다. 반면 리플은 같은 기간 620원에서 825원으로 33% 급등했다.

 

리플이 최근 다른 코인에 비해 큰 폭으로 뛴 것은 미국 SEC를 상대로 한 소송이 곧 끝날 것이라는 전망이 나오고 있기 때문이다. 미국의 코인 전문 매체인 크립토포테이토는 “리플의 최근 상승세는 발행사인 리플랩스와 SEC의 법적 분쟁이 끝나가고 있다는 기대감이 반영됐기 때문”이라며 “프레드 리스폴리와 제레미 호건 등 가상자산 전문 변호사들도 올 여름에 양 측이 합의에 이를 것으로 전망한다”고 2024년 7월 15일 보도했다. SEC는 지난 2020년 리플이 증권성 코인에 해당된다며 리플의 발행사인 리플랩스를 증권법 위반 혐의로 제소했고 리플랩스는 이를 반박하며 SEC를 상대로 맞소송을 걸었다. 미국 뉴욕지방법원은 2023년 7월 리플랩스의 손을 들어줬지만, SEC는 즉각 항소했고 양 측은 지금껏 공방을 이어오고 있다. 올해 초 SEC가 비트코인 현물 ETF를 승인하면서 비트코인을 비롯한 대부분의 가상자산 가격이 크게 올랐지만 리플은 오랜 기간 이어진 소송과 규제에 대한 우려로 상승세를 타지 못했다. 3월 중순 이후부터 이달 초까지 약 4개월 간 약세가 이어지면서 가격이 지난해 말보다 낮은 수준까지 떨어졌다. 무려 4년을 끌어온 SEC와의 법적 분쟁이 곧 끝날 것이라는 기대감이 커지면서 그 동안 짓눌려 왔던 가격이 단기간에 급등하고 있다는 게 가상자산 업계의 분석이다.

Ripple, a virtual asset that was once considered one of the "three major coins" along with Bitcoin and Ethereum, has risen sharply recently. Analysts say that investment has been concentrated as a series of predictions that the legal dispute with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which has been dragging on for four years since 2020, will soon come to an end. As of 3 p.m. on July 18, 2024, Ripple was trading at 825 won on Upbit, a domestic virtual asset trading platform. Ripple gained strength in the morning market, exceeding 880 won, and was adjusted as profit-taking sales increased. The virtual asset market has been on the rise so far since former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the U.S. presidential election, was shot on July 13, 2024. This is because expectations for deregulation have grown as former President Trump, who is showing a virtual asset-friendly stance, has become more likely to win an election due to the incident. Ripple has shown the most noticeable upward trend in recent days among major coins. Bitcoin, the "long stock," rose about 10% over the week from 82 million won on the 11th to 90 million won on the same day. In the case of Ethereum, the expected approval of Ethereum's spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) was reflected, but the rise was similar to that of Bitcoin. On the other hand, Ripple jumped 33% from 620 won to 825 won during the same period.

 

Ripple's recent jump compared to other coins is due to the prospect that the lawsuit against the U.S. SEC will soon end. CryptoPotato, a U.S. coin media outlet, reported on July 15, 2024, "Ripple's recent rise reflects the expectation that the legal dispute between the issuer, Ripple Labs, and the SEC is nearing an end," adding, "Lawyers specializing in virtual assets such as Fred Rispoli and Jeremy Hogan also predict that the two sides will reach an agreement this summer." The SEC filed a complaint against Ripple Labs, the issuer of Ripple, in 2020 for violating securities laws, and Ripple Labs countered it and filed a counter-action lawsuit against the SEC. The U.S. District Court in New York ruled in favor of Ripple Labs in July 2023, but the SEC immediately appealed and the two sides have been fighting each other so far. The price of most virtual assets, including Bitcoin, rose significantly when the SEC approved Bitcoin spot ETF earlier this year, but Ripple failed to rise due to long-standing litigation and regulatory concerns. Prices fell to a lower level than at the end of last year as the weakness continued for about four months from mid-March to early this month. The virtual asset industry analyzes that prices, which have been weighed down so far, are soaring in a short period of time as expectations grow that the legal dispute with the SEC, which has been dragging on for four years, will soon end.
